Former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim appointed as new AC Milan head coach

The 41-year-old takes over from Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed after a fifth-place finish last season, as the club looks to overhaul its operations.

"I know exactly what this Club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colours represent," Amorim said in a statement.

"I cannot wait to get started and to experience every day the passion that drives AC Milan."

Milan ended a dismal second half of the season with a 2-1 home loss to Cagliari on the final matchday, winning just one of their last four matches. The final whistle was met with loud jeers from the San Siro crowd as they missed out on a place in Europe's elite competition for a second consecutive season.

Amorim endured a difficult 14-month stint as head coach at Manchester United, marked by public criticism, inflexible tactics and poor results.

In October last year, United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe described Amorim as an "outstanding young manager" who needed another three years to prove himself, but that faith gradually faded and the Portuguese was dismissed in January.

Amorim's reputation remains strong thanks to his successes at Sporting CP, where the former Portugal midfielder led the club to their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years in 2021 before securing a second league championship in 2024.

Amorim, who earned 14 caps for his country, becomes Milan's fourth managerial appointment since the club last lifted the Serie A trophy under Stefano Pioli in 2022.
