Eddie Howe admits Anthony Gordon may have played final game for Newcastle
Gordon has sat out Newcastle's previous four fixtures, two of them caused by a hip complaint, while rumours intensify that the German top-flight title holders are nearing a deal to bring him to the club once this term concludes.
When questioned on Friday about whether he had omitted Gordon due to forward planning, Howe remarked: "At this point in the campaign, some of our actions will involve considering the upcoming season, obviously, so indeed.
"Anthony has only recently recovered from his injury. The squad has performed strongly without him, and with some thought towards what lies ahead, yes."
Howe indicated that discussions regarding Gordon's possible exit might be in progress, though he stressed his lack of involvement in those talks.
"No, nothing to report from my side. Such conversations could be taking place, but not including me," he added.
Howe must now weigh whether to include Gordon for the Premier League encounter against struggling West Ham at St James' Park on Sunday.
Brazilian midfielder Joelinton, who filled Gordon's role on the left flank during last weekend's match at Nottingham Forest, is dealing with a thigh issue.
"If it benefits the team, and I always prioritise the team and club over any player, then yes, I would select him," Howe commented regarding the chances of Gordon playing this weekend.
