Carrick insists future with Manchester United will be decided 'pretty soon'
Carrick has received widespread acclaim for guiding Manchester United towards Champions League spots following his interim appointment after Ruben Amorims dismissal back in January.
Although the club faced speculation about numerous candidates for the managerial role in recent times, executive Omar Berrada and football operations chief Jason Wilcox seem poised to endorse Carricks continuation to co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.
This ex-midfielder for both United and England has outperformed initial projections by positioning his squad third in the Premier League standings prior to their upcoming fixture against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Discussions regarding a two-year contract extension for Carrick, including an additional optional year, are reportedly advancing and may reach agreement before the week concludes.
When questioned on his prospects, Carrick shared with journalists: "Cant blame you for asking, two games to go, theres not much else I can say.
"Listen, the future for me is going to be decided pretty soon. We knew that was going to be towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season, so nothing has changed.
"Theres no big swing on that, that is what it is, and obviously whatever is beyond that is pretty close round the corner anyway."
Having been unable to promote Middlesbrough to the top flight, Carrick departed the Championship outfit in 2025.
His tenure at United has proven far more successful, establishing himself as a cohesive and steady presence following Amorims chaotic period.
During his accomplished 12-year midfield career at United, Carrick secured victories in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
"Its a unique football club, a special football club. Im immensely proud to have come back and been a part of it, to help," he remarked.
"As a supporter and ex-player, as a pure supporter and caring about the club so much, to come back and help and move the club forward was important.
"To make a big step and get back in the Champions League is good. Were happy with the work weve done so far."
Manchester Uniteds last Premier League triumph came under Sir Alex Ferguson in his concluding campaign of 2013.
Several prominent coaches, such as Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, have struggled to elevate United back to dominance in English football.
"Youve always got to aim upwards. Thats the beauty of football and competition, to achieve something and back it up, improve on things, thats always the challenge," Carrick commented regarding the teams steady advancement this term.
"For the players, for the squad, for the whole group, for the club, we want to keep moving in a positive way and in the right direction.
"The closer you get to the top, the less room for progress, but progress is what needs to be aimed for."
