Camavinga excluded, Crystal Palace pair included: Deschamps reveals France's World Cup team
Robin Risser earned his spot thanks to strong showings with Racing Lens, a side set to end up runners-up in Ligue 1 and facing off in the French Cup final soon. The 21 year old scooped the Ligue 1 top goalkeeper award just days ago.
This marks his debut international summons, coming at the cost of Lucas Chevalier, who seemed likely to make the cut until he dropped out of the Paris Saint Germain lineup and picked up an injury that has kept him out since January.
Jean Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace, who first appeared for the national team back in October, boasts three appearances and edges out Randal Kolo Muani to take the vacancy left by Hugo Ekitike following a torn Achilles suffered during Liverpool's Champions League clash with PSG last month.
"His style sets him apart from the typical forwards," Deschamps commented on the decision.
'Camavinga must feel let down'
Rumours swirled around whether Deschamps would retain Eduardo Camavinga given his underwhelming year at Real Madrid, yet the manager opted for Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix, fresh off a solid outing versus Brazil in March.
"I expect this comes as a major setback for him, especially with the injuries plaguing his season," Deschamps noted regarding Camavinga.
Nothing else stood out as unexpected in the 26 player roster, featuring ten members from the Qatar World Cup final four years back, plus holdovers like Lucas Hernandez, N'Golo Kante, and Kylian Mbappe from the 2018 Moscow champions.
Mbappe, as skipper, heads up a potent forward line including Ballon d'Or recipient Ousmane Dembele and emerging talent Michael Olise.
The lineup aired live during the prime evening news segment on Frances TF1 network.
France landed in Group I alongside Norway, Senegal, and Iraq. The defending champions kick off at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday June 16th at 15.00 local time (21.00 CET) facing Senegal.
