Arsenal secure 0-0 stalemate with Sporting to advance to Champions League semi-finals

Arsenal required a strong display at home after suffering defeats in their previous three league fixtures, all the more so with a pivotal away clash against Premier League challengers Manchester City looming this Sunday.

The Gunners kicked off with promise, but their momentum faded as Sporting gained composure in the game, and Francisco Trincao registered the opening notable opportunity by blasting a shot wide from close range inside the area after 18 minutes.

Pedro Goncalves then skewed an effort high from a narrow position around the half-hour stage, as the Portuguese outfit maintained their poise, leaving the Emirates faithful growing restless heading into the interval.

Geny Catamo issued a stern alert just two minutes shy of the break, latching onto Maximiliano Araujo’s delivery with a volley that grazed the edge of the far upright, leaving goalkeeper David Raya stranded.

Eberechi Eze capped the opening period by sailing a strike over from 20 yards, in a half where Arsenal scarcely tested Sporting custodian Rui Silva.

Having netted 14 of their 20 Champions League strikes this term post-interval, Sporting nearly extended that sequence when Araujo sliced a shot astray barely three minutes into the second half.

Mikel Arteta reacted by substituting ex-Sporting forward Viktor Gyokeres for Kai Havertz, the scorer from the first leg, and Arsenal came close to breaking the deadlock right away as Noni Madueke surged into the area, though he lost his footing and poked the ball into the side netting.

Tension mounted further as Arsenal toiled to seal the aggregate win, prompting Arteta to receive a yellow card for disputing a call during the latter stages of the half.

With scant room for slip-ups, the hosts rallied late on as Sporting wilted, highlighted by Leandro Trossard’s header striking the upright off Max Dowman’s set-piece delivery.

This marks Arsenal’s league-leading eighth shutout in the competition, providing a firm base for their semi-final matchup versus Atletico Madrid, and they have now tasted defeat in only one of their last 24 European outings at the Emirates (17 wins, six draws).

For Sporting, their quest for an inaugural semi-final berth persists, extending their barren streak in European away ties against English clubs to 11 encounters (six draws, five losses).
