Antonio Conte confirms departure from Napoli following two year tenure
"It has been an immense privilege, truly extraordinary to lead Napoli... These past two seasons have been remarkable, an unforgettable journey," stated Conte to journalists.
"This was my choice, I informed the chairman several weeks ago... Napoli will forever remain close to my heart."
Conte, who secured last season’s Serie A championship with Napoli, is strongly speculated to become the next Italy head coach once the nation’s football federation appoints a new president next month.
"My recommendation would be to bring in Pep Guardiola," remarked Conte.
Rasmus Hojlund, now a permanent acquisition after Napoli clinched a Champions League spot last weekend, netted his 16th goal of an impressive debut season in Italy to seal victory on the final matchday.
Nonetheless, the upcoming summer promises significant changes in southern Italy, with Bologna’s Vincenzo Italiano emerging as the leading candidate to succeed Conte.
Napoli’s proprietor, Aurelio De Laurentiis, declined a $2 billion bid from an investor consortium spearheaded by Underdog Global Partners to purchase the club.
De Laurentiis has maintained a tumultuous rapport with Napoli supporters, despite rescuing the club from insolvency in 2004 and ending a 33 year title drought.
The triumphant 2023 Scudetto, among the most iconic moments in modern European football, was followed by another successful campaign under Conte, who concluded his tenure with a farewell lap around the pitch.
