The Russian Premier League is the top professional football division in Russia. This league kicked off in 2001 and has been administered ever since by the Russian Footbal Union, replacing the Russian Top Division, which was created in 1992.
Like many European leagues, this competition operates on a promotion-relegation system, with sixteen teams playing in all RPL tournaments, which usually start in July and have a big winter break between December and late February. The lowest-ranked teams in the league are relegated to the Russian First League, while those who finish in 13th and 14th places enter a relegation playoff against two teams from the First League.
Over the years, there have been over 50 teams playing in the Russian top-flight, Only three clubs (Spartak Mosco, CSKA Moscow, and Lokomotiv Moscow) have avoided relegation since the league was created. Out of these teams, Spartak Moscow have been the most successful.
Russian Premier League games are available to watch online via a subscription to the league’s website. Linear TV broadcasts are also available via Match TV and Match Premier, who signed broadcasting rights with the competition until 2025.
