The Colombian Cup (Copa Colombia) is an annual footballing competition for professional men’s football teams in Colombia. It was first founded in 1950 and was re-established in February 2008 when the 36 member clubs of the División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional Colombiano (DIMAYOR) voted to resurrect the competition.
Initially, the winner of the Copa Colombia gained a ticket to the Copa Sudamericana, but starting in 2017, this was changed to give the Copa Colombia winner access to the Copa Libertadores for the following campaign.
Atlético Nacional, Independiente Medellín, and Millonarios are among the most successful teams in Copa Colombia history.
During the 1960s and up until the 1990s, matches from the Copa Colombia were primarily broadcast by public-TV broadcaster Televisión Nacional de Colombia (TVN). Starting in the mid-1990s, a series of paid-TV providers acquired media rights, with both Caracol TV and RCN Televisión holding TV broadcast rights at various points up until the mid 2010s.
In the 2010s, Win Sports, which is affiliated with the Colombian Football Federation, successfully secured TV broadcast rights for the Copa Colombia in a multi-year deal. Since then, Copa Colombia matches have been shown both on TV and live-streamed via Win Sports’ family of channels.
