About ÖFB-Cup
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Austrian Cup, or ÖFB Cup in German, is a cup tournament created and managed by the Austrian Football Association. The competition was created in 1918 and was held without any interruption until 1939. Once World War II came to an end, the competition was held until 1949, but lack of interest and sponsorship money made it hard for the AFA to put it together. It was then re-scheduled in 1958 and has gone on without any interruptions since then.
The competition includes teams from the top four football categories in Austrian football, with 64 clubs earning the spot in the tournament. All rounds are played with one-leg ties, with the final being played in neutral ground. The winning team earns a spot in the preliminary stages of the UEFA Europa League, which has led the tournament to be called “Goals for Europe”, since it is the quickest way for an Austrian club to play in European tournaments.
Throughout the competition’s history, teams from the city of Vienna have dominated the tournament, and that has eventually made Austria Wien the most winning team in this event, with over 25 titles to their name.
Broadcasting rights for this competition have been awarded to Austrian public TV company ORF 1. Meanwhile, streaming options to follow this tournament include ÖFB TV, owned by the Austrian Football Association.
