Socceroos set for showdown with Graham Arnold's Iraq in 2027 Asian Cup

Australia has been placed in Group D with Singapore, Iraq, and Tajikistan for the major continental tournament, scheduled in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5.

The Socceroos, ranked 27th, should dominate Singapore (ranked 147th) and Tajikistan (ranked 103rd), yet they will compete directly against Graham Arnold's Iraq (ranked 57th) for the group lead during their second match at King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh.

Arnold, formerly the Socceroos manager before Tony Popovic took over, lately guided Iraq to their first World Cup appearance in four decades through resilient displays versus the United Arab Emirates and Bolivia, overcoming the latter 2-1 as underdogs in a one-off play-off in Mexico.

Both Australia and Iraq topped their Asian Cup qualifying sections, securing victories in all six encounters with relative ease.

The Group D victor gains a favourable position in the Round of 16, meeting a third-placed team from Groups B, E, or F, whereas the Group E runner-up involves South Korea, UAE, Vietnam, and the qualifier winner between Lebanon and Yemen.

Should the Socceroos advance deeply, a straightforward semi-final path seems unlikely, as Group F powerhouses Qatar (2019 and 2023 title holders) and Japan (winners in 1992, 2000, 2004, and 2011) are poised to enter distinct halves of the knockout stage if they secure top-two finishes as anticipated.

Australia, champions in 2015, marks their sixth outing in the competition since shifting from Oceania to Asia in the 2000s, though they exited in the quarter-finals during the previous two tournaments.
