Rayo Vallecano hold off AEK Athens rally to advance to Conference League semi-finals

AEK's only previous success in reversing a 3-0 deficit from the first leg in European competition came against a Queen's Park Rangers team that included players like Gerry Francis and Stan Bowles, yet an energetic home support quickly began hoping for a repeat of that 1977 triumph following a stunning opening period.

That said, the outcome might have shifted entirely if Rayo's Andrei Ratiu had capitalised on his opportunity in the fifth minute, though the Romanian inexplicably nudged the ball wide from close range with an open goal in front of him.

Far from merely delaying the inevitable, Ratiu's error sparked an impressive response from AEK.

In the 11th minute, Zini powered in the game's first goal from eight yards, as the Angolan shrugged off Rayo midfielder Pathe Ciss to connect with a long throw into the penalty area.

A little over 20 minutes on, Ratiu endured a disastrous evening by fouling Aboubakary Koita inside the box after the Mauritanian had weaved through defenders.

AEK skipper Razvan Marin calmly converted the spot-kick to narrow the overall gap to just one goal, and the Romanian nearly sealed the turnaround right before the interval, only for his powerful strike from distance to be parried away by Rayo keeper Augusto Batalla.

The second half brought no relief for the stunned Spanish outfit, with Zini leaping to head in a cross from Dereck Kutesa just six minutes after the break, the Angolan's deft touch sending the ball arcing into the net past Batalla.

Rayo had struggled to create chances of their own, so it seemed unlikely they would score, but within 10 minutes of losing their advantage in the tie, they had reclaimed it.

Isi Palazon spotted some room and surged into the AEK area, slotting home a superb effort that restored Spanish control of the contest.

Amid the constant tension, AEK's best chance to equalise again arrived in the 66th minute.

Pacha Espino unwisely hesitated with possession near his own goal, letting Lazaros Rota dispossess him and whip in a dangerous low ball to the near post, but Zini could not adjust quickly enough to tap it in from mere inches away.

This turned out to be the final glimmer of possibility for the Greeks, whose valiant effort ultimately proved insufficient, allowing Rayo to move on to their debut European semi-final appearance.
