Manchester City Share Points in Exciting Six-Goal Draw Against Everton, Handing Arsenal Control of Premier League Race

Any hope among Everton fans from Beto’s return to the starting eleven was quickly dampened by Manchester City’s commanding opening. Rayan Cherki tested Pickford early, while Antoine Semenyo nearly teed up a teammate by rolling a rebound across the goalmouth.

Though Semenyo blazed over from 21 yards out, it felt inevitable that Everton’s long drought without a win over City in nine years would continue.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall offered Everton a brief spark of optimism in the 25th minute when Abdukodir Khusanov blocked a counter-attack shot wide.

This momentarily energised the home side, leading to a stronger opportunity shortly after as Merlin Rohl picked out Beto in the penalty area, only for Gianluigi Donnarumma to make a crucial fingertip save.

Manchester City took heed and regained their rhythm, breaking the deadlock just before halftime when Cherki laid off to Jeremy Doku, who bent a fine effort from outside the box into the top corner beyond Pickford’s outstretched arm.

The second half began with City still controlling play, but Everton’s quick breaks created two clear openings for Iliman Ndiaye.

First, he was closed down enough to prevent his effort from carrying the force to beat Donnarumma at his near post, then a lucky bobble left him one-on-one, yet the keeper stayed big to block the close-range shot.

Soon after Thierno Barry replaced Beto, Everton levelled in bizarre fashion. Marc Guehi’s clearance of Rohl’s pass looked routine, but his misplaced backheel allowed Barry to steal in and slot the ball calmly under Donnarumma into the bottom corner.

Having gifted away their advantage so carelessly, City lost their poise, though Guehi made partial amends by blocking Ndiaye at the upright with 20 minutes left.

Relief was short-lived however, as Jake O’Brien turned the match around from the resulting corner, nodding in James Garner’s delivery at the front post.

Ndiaye wasted a golden chance to seal victory on 75 minutes, shooting tamely at Donnarumma after being sent clear.

Barry stepped up where his teammate faltered, capitalising on Rohl’s surging run past Mateo Kovacic down the right, which saw the ball ricochet invitingly for an easy finish.

City responded instantly to cut the deficit, Erling Haaland racing clear to chip Pickford delicately.

True to form, the visitors pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, aware that defeat could derail their championship hopes.

They earned a dramatic leveller in stoppage time, Doku latching onto a corner and drilling into the far bottom corner past Pickford.

Even with the late salvage, this result might mark the point where the challengers overtook the champions, leaving the Premier League crown firmly in Arsenal’s grasp.
