Dan Burn sets sights on World Cup glory as Thomas Tuchel's England continue to dream big

England secured their sole World Cup victory on home turf in 1966, but Tuchel and his squad are optimistic about ending the nation's 60-year drought when they eventually mount their bid for the trophy in North America.

"I think it is pointless coming here and saying that we do not want to achieve that," the 34-year-old Newcastle United defender remarked regarding England's ambitions to win the title.

"That was the challenge, to add a second star to the shirt. So that is what we aim to do."

England commence their campaign with a demanding opener against the Croatians, who eliminated Gareth Southgate's Three Lions in the semi-finals in 2018, followed by matches against Ghana and Panama in the remaining group stage fixtures.

The team arrived in Kansas City on Saturday after a stint in Florida that Burn believes has readied the players for the intense heat ahead.

"I think after the week we had in West Palm, I have not felt the heat as much here; it seems a bit drier and less humid," he said.

"But it is the same for every team. It is not something we are overly concerned about at the moment."

England's clash with Croatia occurs nearly a week after the tournament's start and will be among the final matches in the opening round of group stage fixtures, but Burn believes the delay will be beneficial.

"Now that we are here, I am excited," he said after arriving in Kansas City. "I think it is when the tournament started ... that is probably when it really sank in.

"I do not think it affects us at all. It just gives us a bit more time to study the competition, perhaps get accustomed to the feel of the games and the pace they will be played at before we play next week."
