Chinese Coach Urges Team to Remain Composed in Tense Taiwan Match

Chinese coach Ante Milicic encouraged his players on Friday to stay "calm and confident" during the intense Women's Asian Cup quarter-final against Taiwan.

The current title holders are aiming for a record-breaking 10th Asian championship yet they remain cautious about a rival that has demonstrated progress throughout the competition.

Taiwan suffered a 2-0 defeat to the highly favoured Japan in the group stage but they were far from dominated.

"They posed a real challenge to Japan and then secured victories in their following two fixtures so we realise this will be a demanding encounter" Milicic commented before the Saturday matchup in Perth.

"However if we implement our strategy effectively and play at our full potential that ought to secure the victory for us.

"By adhering to a structured approach staying composed and assured and tackling each match individually we can achieve success and advance deeper into the event."

Similar to China Taiwan has received enthusiastic backing at the Australian tournament although it has involved some disputes.

In their most recent fixture in Sydney versus India ex-Taiwan coach Chen Kuei-jen was removed from the venue for initiating a "Taiwan Jiayu" or "Go Taiwan" cheer.

This incident prompted a complaint from Taiwan's foreign ministry to the Asian Football Confederation regarding "unequal treatment".

Taiwan participates as "Chinese Taipei" in global sporting competitions.

This stems from a diplomatic agreement with China permitting the island's involvement in key events without asserting independent statehood.

China regards Taiwan as its own territory.

Taiwan coach Prasobchoke Chokemor kept the focus on the sport during his pre-game media briefing.

"We can claim a solid performance against Japan managing a 0-0 scoreline in the opening half" the Thai coach noted.

"The upcoming match will differ in strategy but we believe we can hold our own versus elite opponents provided we concentrate on our strengths and unite in effort."

On the line are progression to the semi-finals plus spots in the 2027 World Cup as the leading six teams earn qualification for the Brazil tournament.
