2022 World Cup hero Mathew Leckie grateful for Australia call up after injury struggle

Four years ago in Qatar, Leckie scored a stunning goal to defeat Denmark 1-0 and propel Australia into the last 16 for only the second time in their World Cup history.

Now aged 35, the converted midfielder has endured an injury disrupted season with Melbourne City but remains hopeful of securing a fourth World Cup appearance following his inclusion in the Socceroos training camp in Florida.

"It’s been a difficult period but I’ve always maintained the belief that I could return," Leckie explained during a video conference on Friday.

"When I’m fully fit, I know I can still perform at a high level.

"I don’t sense any decline in my physical abilities, and the focus has been on maintaining fitness. I still have plenty to contribute when I’m injury free."

Leckie faced challenges returning to action for Melbourne City after undergoing hip surgery in December but demonstrated his quality during April appearances.

Popovic strongly hinted Leckie would feature in his squad if completely fit, praising the veteran after he completed 120 minutes during City’s penalty defeat against Auckland FC in the A League playoffs.

"His selection depends on physical condition, but the technical ability he displayed at 35 without regular matches surpasses anything a younger player could replicate," Popovic remarked earlier this month.

Leckie expressed appreciation for the manager’s comments and emphasised his dedication to justifying Popovic’s trust.

"I’ve been fully committed throughout this training camp, working rigorously to prove my readiness," he stated.

"I’m prepared to fulfil whatever role the manager believes will benefit the team."
