VPS overtakes HJK in Veikkausliiga after impressive second-half performance

VPS 2-1 HJK

HJK appeared to be gaining momentum following away draws against the current top teams, Inter Turku and KuPS, before securing a victory at Lahti. However, a surprising loss to TPS in their previous match left them with just one win in their last four games, two of which were against newly promoted teams.

Initially, HJK seemed to be regaining their form when they took the lead in the sixth minute. A deep cross from the left was headed back by Alex Ring, and Lassi Lappalainen struck it first-time on the half-volley, marking his first goal since returning to HJK from MLS, aided by a deflection.

The home side struggled to create meaningful chances for the remainder of the first half. However, their luck turned shortly after the hour mark.

Luka Smyth received the ball from Jayden Turfkruier, turned, and shrugged off multiple challenges before driving a low shot from 25 yards. While the shot lacked power, its precision more than compensated, slipping past Matej Markovic and finding the bottom corner.

In the closing 15 minutes, VPS secured the win against the record champions after being awarded a penalty, and Simon Lindholm confidently converted from the spot to claim all three points.

VPS is now unbeaten in five league matches since their sole defeat of the season—a game in which they finished with nine men. HJK's current record stands at three wins, three draws, and three losses this campaign.
