Liga I

Romania’s Liga I is the top-tier football category in that country. This league is frequently ranked among the top European leagues by UEFA’s coefficient system, and it works under a promotion-relegation system with Liga II, the second highest category of Romania’s football system.

Liga I is played by sixteen teams every year. The maiden season of this league took place in 1910, and it has gone on without any interruptions since the end of World War II. The most successful team in league history is Steaua Bucuresti, or simply FCSB, who have dominated the competition with 26 titles and managed to win six straight crowns between 1992 and 1998.

The tournament format forces all teams to play 30 regular-season games. Then, the best six teams enter a championship round, with the remaining eight entering a relegation playoff. Those included in the championship playoff see their points halved and rounded up forward before playing ten more games, which will determine the winner and will also hand out spots for European competitions.

As for the relegation playoff, the two teams that earn the lowest number of points will be automatically relegated to Liga II, while the third and fourth-worst teams will enter a promotion playoff against the third and fourth-ranked teams from Liga II.

To watch Liga I games in Romania, the league signed an agreement with Digi Sport, which has covered the competition for over a decade. The agreement also covers Liga II, with over 250 games from each league being covered by the pay-tv channel and its online streaming service.
