The FIFA U-20 World Cup came to light to develop talents around the world. The format was taken from a juvenile cup played in Cannes during the 1970s, and as its name states, it has been organized by FIFA since its inception.

The first official edition of this tournament was held in Tunisia, back in 1977. That first tournament was played by sixteen teams, with the USSR becoming the first-ever U-20 champion after beating Mexico in a penalty shootout. Since then, FIFA decided to play the tournament every two years. The only exception to that decision came in 2021, when FIFA decided to cancel the tournament set to be played in Indonesia because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

FIFA is keen on expanding its tournaments from time to time, and the U-20 World Cup is no exception. The competition has been played by a total of 24 teams since the 1997 edition. No team has been able to play in all 21 editions of the FIFA U-20 WC, with Brazil being the closest to that feat by only being left out of the editions played in 1979, 2013, 2017, and 2019.

Argentina is the national team with the most U-20 titles, with six (1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2007). Portugal stands as the most winning European side, with two tiles up until today (1989 and 1991).

FIFA made history by streaming the entirety of the 2023 U-20 World Cup on their own platform: FIFA+. It is expected that subsequent tournaments follow the same path, although there could be local channels and platforms involved in broadcasting upcoming competitions.
