Campeonato Piauiense hakkında
Tarihçe, format, organizasyon, medya kapsamı
The Campeonato Piauiense is a soccer competition for the state of Piaui, Brazil. The championship was held for the first time in 1916 and was previously known as Liga Theresinense de Esportes Terrestres. It is operated by the Piaui Football Federation and overseen by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
Over the years, this competition has been played with different formats, but always keeping the principle of promotion and relegation. The current format to determine the champion and the teams that are relegated sees eight teams divided into two groups, where each team will play twice against its group opponents. Once those games are over, teams are paired up in an Olympic crossover format, where the top team from each group faces the fourth-ranked team from the other. These games are used to get the combined top four teams, which will enter the third stage. As for the relegation battle, the two teams with the lowest number of points get relegated.
The final round faces the top team against the fourth, while the second and third lock horns in the second semifinal. The semis are played on a home-and-away format, with the highest-ranked team getting home-field advantage for the return leg. The same approach is used for the final, where extra time and penalties are used to determine the winner in case the aggregate is level after both games.
Since its creation, many teams have been capable of winning the title. Some have already disappeared, but one that has stuck around to increase its legacy is River Atlético Clube, a team from Teresina that has won over 30 titles, the first of them coming in 1948.
