Andreas Christensen extends contract with Barcelona but is forced to accept hefty pay cut

The 30-year old Andreas Christensen will head into his fifth season as a blaugrana after signing from Chelsea in the summer of 2022. He has since become a valuable member of the squad thanks to his tactical intelligence, his experience, and his ability on the ball.

According to La Vanguardia, Christensen will take a hefty 50% pay cut to remain at the Camp Nou. Previously, the Danish defender earned a gross salary of approximately €12 million, but will now earn €6m (€3m net) per season. Allegedly, the new contract also contains a termination clause, where the club and player have the option to cancel it in the second year.

In his four seasons with the Club up to now, he has made a total of 98 official appearances for Barça: 71 in the league, 15 in the Champions League, 2 in the Europa League, 6 in the Copa del Rey, and 4 in the Spanish Super Cup. In that time, he has also won three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups.

Christensen has been haunted by a series of injuries during his time in Barcelona, which has limited his regular game time. He is part of Hansi Flick’s center-back options that also include Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Eric Garcia, and Ronald Araujo.
