New York City mayor announces 1,000 affordable tickets for World Cup games

According to sources, the mayor, who took office earlier this year, finalised the agreement following discussions with FIFA's chief executive, Gianni Infantino. The negotiations reportedly included a virtual meeting with ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, as covered by leading sports outlet The Athletic.

The allocated batch of 1,000 tickets covers five initial group stage matches plus two subsequent knockout fixtures, though they exclude access to the championship decider on 19th July.

In a social media update, the mayor stated, "We promised to champion more budget-friendly options for residents last year. Now, mirroring Arsenal's success, we've delivered on that pledge."

Local residents can register for the ticket lottery from 25th May, with successful applicants being informed by 3rd June.

At the official announcement, US national team player Timothy Weah commented, "The mayor's efforts to secure these opportunities for New Yorkers are commendable. My role is to spread happiness and create memorable experiences, which I'm fully committed to doing."

MetLife Stadium, the venue for these matches, will stage seven World Cup encounters this summer, showcasing football powerhouses including Brazil, Morocco, England and Germany.
