Roger De Sa announces exit as Ghana's assistant coach, clarifies Queiroz status

The South African, who worked alongside Carlos Queiroz throughout the tournament, told KickOff Magazine that his agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) covered only the World Cup campaign.

"I was only contracted until the end of July, so that's it. My contract was just for the World Cup, and it ends on the 31st of July."

De Sa also weighed in on the ongoing speculation around Queiroz’s own future, insisting that he was not aware of any formal decision by the head coach to leave his post and that any such announcement would ordinarily have been communicated to him first.

"I don't know if that's official that he has left; I have only seen it on social media. But I don't think that is from him because he would have told me if that's the case."

The 60-year-old’s comments come days after Ghana were eliminated from the World Cup at the Round-of-32 stage following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Black Stars had progressed from Group L as one of the eight best third-placed teams after a 1-0 win over Panama in Toronto, a 0-0 draw with England in Boston and a 2-1 loss to Croatia in Philadelphia.

Reflecting on the campaign, De Sa said the biggest challenge the team faced was logistical rather than technical, pointing to the demands of navigating a tournament spread across host countries.

"If there was one difficulty, I think it was the travel. The cities were quite distant sometimes, different time zones. So, that does have an effect on all the teams. The travel is a bit taxing on the players."

Ghana return to competitive action in September, when they face African heavyweights Ivory Coast in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
