Xavi Simons Aims to Forge His Legacy at Spurs Following Son's Exit

Xavi Simons expressed his desire to "create my own legacy" following his goal that celebrated Son Heung-mins comeback visit to Tottenham, donning the iconic number seven jersey previously sported by the ex Spurs standout.

The Dutch playmaker built on his dominant performance in the recent victory against Brentford with yet another strong outing during Tottenhams 3-0 Champions League triumph over Slavia Prague on Tuesday evening.

Simons sealed the win with a penalty in the closing stages, allowing Son to properly part ways with Spurs supporters after ten years of outstanding contributions at the north London side.

"Scoring the goals feels wonderful, yet performing well on the field matters most to me and Im truly relishing it," Xavi remarked.

The 22 year old, acquired for £52 million ($69 million) from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer period, continued: "I had not encountered Son personally until recently, just a brief meeting. He stands as a massive icon for the team and its an honour for me to inherit this jersey and establish my own mark, so Im thrilled to have met him."

Son netted 173 times across 454 outings for Tottenham, concluding his last official match with their Europa League final success against Manchester United on May 21.

The South Korean skipper departed Spurs in pre season to join Los Angeles FC, preventing an earlier farewell to the fanbase until Tuesdays event.

Prior to the match starting, a mural honouring Son was revealed along Tottenham High Road.

Son then spoke directly to the 47,821 strong audience, declaring "I will forever be a Spurs player".

In comments to Korean press later, he noted: "Above all, Im glad to return to the spot where I grew up and which feels like home.

"Im deeply thankful for the warm reception and cheers from numerous supporters. Mondays travel proved tougher due to the extended flight duration, yet it turned into a joyful day. Many thanks."

Mathys Tel, recently added to Tottenhams Champions League roster this week as an injury substitute for Dominic Solanke, numbered among those pleased to reconnect with Son.

"Sonny acts like my elder sibling," Tel shared. "He constantly messages me, offering unwavering backing, so returning to Champions League action where we secured a win and Sonny attended... plenty of positives.

"Sonny holds legendary status at Tottenham, thus when someone like him visits post his remarkable achievements, you pour all your effort into it for him."
