Van Dijk Labels Liverpool Situation a 'Mess'

Virgil van Dijk has admitted that the Liverpool squad is failing manager Arne Slot following their latest Premier League setback, a 3-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest.

The defending champions have now dropped six of their past seven domestic matches, dropping them into the lower reaches of the standings and increasing the scrutiny on Slot despite the teams substantial investment of close to 450 million pounds (590 million dollars) during the summer window.

"We are certainly disappointing him (Slot), but we have also let ourselves down," Van Dijk commented.

"First, you examine your own contributions, then support your teammates to escape this predicament, as it truly is a mess right now, that much is clear.

"As title holders, we cannot accept being in this position. So, what steps will we take? We must commit to reversing it, and that mindset is essential for all."

The high profile acquisitions from the summer have yet to deliver meaningful contributions.

Alexander Isak, who arrived for a UK record fee of 125 million pounds, remains goalless in the league for Liverpool and appeared far from his Newcastle heights during a subdued 68 minute appearance against Forest.

However, several key figures from last years victorious campaign have also struggled, including Van Dijks defensive colleague Ibrahima Konate, who was substituted early by Slot after yet another subpar showing.

"I expect every player to own their performance on the field. That is key to challenging one another and improving collectively," Van Dijk continued.

"We achieved success as a unit last season, with everyone involved and content, so during hard times, unity is vital rather than blame.

"Stand up, confront the challenges repeatedly, because quitting has no place here. This club has overcome numerous obstacles historically and always emerged stronger."

Liverpools European campaign in the Champions League has provided some contrast, boasting three victories in four fixtures.

The upcoming midweek clash at Anfield against PSV Eindhoven might provide a boost for Slots side in their return to continental action.
