Valencia and Rayo Vallecano draw level to edge nearer to avoiding drop

The lower end of the LaLiga standings was packed tightly, leaving both teams in a strange situation with persistent concerns over relegation and dreams of creeping into spots for European football.

Rayo started with energy and missed a chance to go ahead early from a penalty, following a foul by Renzo Saravia on Pacha inside the penalty area. Randy Nteka took the kick from 12 yards, but his shot struck the post.

With luck on their side thanks to the frame of the goal, Valencia pushed ahead and nearly scored when Javi Guerra's effort skimmed just past the upright.

This miss turned out to be expensive, as Rayo took the lead from a corner in the 20th minute. Florian Lejeune shook off his defender and nodded in Gerard Gumbau’s delivery for the UEFA Conference League contenders, marking the Frenchman's second league goal in four games.

Nteka might have made it two after collecting Gumbau’s pass, but Stole Dimitrievski rushed out to block the Angolan forward.

This save proved crucial, as Valencia equalised just before the break with Diego Lopez converting neatly on the first touch from Hugo Duro’s pullback along the goal line.

The second period began quietly, with both Carlos Corberan and Inigo Perez dealing with growing injury concerns after Jose Gaya and Gumbau had to come off. Valencia had already seen Renzo Saravia leave early, making it a tough night for the home team.

The injuries appeared to disrupt the game's pace, as neither side could match their earlier intensity. Passes went astray often, frustrating the fans at Mestalla.

Chances remained scarce, though Cesar Tarrega would rue his header dipping wide late in added time.

No team managed a decisive second strike, in a outcome that nudges both closer to securing their places in the top division for next year.

Rayo’s season in the league has felt flat under Perez, especially with potential European success looming larger, yet this draw keeps a solid upper-half position in reach for Valencia and their opponents too.
