Thomas Frank praises Tottenham's identity in Champions League loss to PSG
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank described the 5-3 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday as a demonstration of the "identity of the team we want to create".
The Spurs side took the lead on two occasions before succumbing again this season following an advantage over PSG. They had also been defeated in Augusts UEFA Super Cup via a penalty shoot-out.
Frank introduced five alterations to the lineup from the one that suffered a 4-1 Premier League reversal against Arsenal on Sunday and adjusted his tactical setup.
"Pleased with the performance. It was the reaction I wanted from the players and from the team," the Danish coach remarked.
"We responded well and bounced back. Thats crucial after a bad performance."
"Today there was more identity of the team we want to create.
"More character, personality, aggressiveness. Three words you need... no matter how you want to play, whatever formation."
The leagues eight-round format sees only 12 sides eliminated. The leading eight advance directly to the last 16, while the following 16 enter a playoff stage.
This outcome propelled PSG up to second place via goal difference, holding a two-point lead ahead of Manchester City in ninth position.
"Weve pretty much booked a top-24 place," commented Luis Enrique, the PSG manager.
"It was a very tough match today... But it was a complete match."
"We have 12 points, we lead the French league and we have not played a single match this season with our first-choice team," he continued.
Tottenham sit in 16th with eight points earned from five fixtures, positioned favourably to secure at least a playoff spot.
"We could have got something out of the game: a draw or a win so its a little frustrating that we conceded some goals," Frank supplemented.
However, Vitinhas initial leveller, a powerful strike moments before the interval, represented "a little bit of magic, not into the top corner but into the top, top corner".
"We played against a decent team," he noted regarding the European title holders, who continue to be without key forward Ousmane Dembele.
"They have the Ballon dOr winner and they have the next one playing in midfield. Vitinha. Wow! What a player."
Luis Enrique displayed a calmer perspective on the Portuguese playmaker.
"He was today, as usual, sensational," stated the Spanish manager. "He has personality."
