Thiago Almada clinches Atletico Madrid La Liga triumph against Osasuna
Thiago Almada secured a 1-0 win for Atletico Madrid over Osasuna in Saturdays La Liga clash, boosting them to fourth spot with his initial strike for the side.
The Argentine forward slotted home in the 69th minute, assisted by Giuliano Simeone, son of head coach Diego Simeone, positioning the Rojiblancos six points off pacesetters Barcelona.
Jan Oblak pulled off an excellent stop towards the end to thwart Ante Budimir and clinch the points for his squad.
Atletico endured a shaky start to the campaign yet remain undefeated in their past six outings spanning various tournaments.
"I am delighted with my debut goal though the key factor is the teams success," Almada commented.
The 24 year old arrived from Botafogo during the off season amid a major team revamp.
"We proceed gradually towards our aim, embedding the belief that outcomes will turn positive."
Atletico believed they had opened the scoring early via Alex Baena however it got disallowed due to Antoine Griezmanns offside position where he influenced the action.
Though dominating proceedings Atletico struggled to break the deadlock until Almadas effort.
"They possess a strong lineup and we found ourselves on the back foot in defence the gap came down to precision inside the area, lacking the strike required for a level result," noted Osasuna custodian Sergio Herrera after producing eight stops.
