Szoboszlai stars and stumbles in Liverpool's FA Cup victory

Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a stunning strike alongside a costly blunder while Liverpool secured a comfortable 4-1 triumph against lower division Barnsley to advance to the FA Cup fourth round.

The Hungarian star blasted a fierce effort from distance into the top corner to get the scoring underway at Anfield on Monday evening.

Jeremie Frimpong added a second for the hosts prior to the interval.

Yet Szoboszlai offered the League One outfit a chance to fight back by mishandling a backpass within his own penalty area, enabling Adam Phillips to slot it past the keeper.

Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane expressed outrage over a denied penalty claim during the second half, stemming from Szoboszlai's challenge on Reyes Cleary.

Arne Slot utilised his substitutes effectively by deploying key talents like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch shortly after the 60 minute mark.

Liverpool found it tough to penetrate upfront throughout much of the second half until the impactful pairing from the bench combined to wrap up the result in the closing six minutes and extra time.

Ekitike's clever touch set up Wirtz, who bent the ball into the top corner for his third strike across five outings since netting his maiden goal for the club in his 23rd outing.

The pair swapped roles during added time when Wirtz provided a generous delivery for Ekitike to finish from close range.

Liverpool now face Brighton, the team that overcame Manchester United, in a home fixture during the fourth round.
