Struggling Rangers appoint Rohl as new manager

Scottish Premiership heavyweights Rangers, who have been facing challenges, named Danny Rohl as their latest manager on Monday, succeeding Russell Martin who was recently dismissed.

The German coach had previously withdrawn from consideration last week, at a time when ex-Rangers player Kevin Muscat seemed the leading candidate.

However, it became clear on Sunday that talks with Muscat, who currently leads Shanghai Port in China, had broken down without an agreement.

Rohl, formerly in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, has agreed to a two and a half year deal at Ibrox and faces a formidable challenge following Rangers dismal opening to the campaign in Glasgow.

The team sits in sixth position in the Premiership, having collected nine points over eight matches, trailing leaders Hearts by 13 points.

"Taking on the head coach position at such a renowned global club is an immense honour," Rohl commented.

"I am aware of the tough beginning to the season, yet there remains plenty to fight for across four competitions, and my team and I are committed to delivering our all for the fans and the club."

Rohl took over at Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, guiding the English Championship side to 12th place in what was his sole complete season in management prior to departing in July.

Prior to that, the 36 year old had coaching stints at RB Leipzig, Southampton, and Bayern Munich, along with serving as an assistant for the Germany national side.

Sporting director Kevin Thelwell praised Rohl as an "outstanding coach".

"His experience in some of the toughest football settings worldwide, where success is non negotiable, has equipped him well for the demands at Rangers," he added.

Martin, who once helmed Southampton in the Premier League, was removed after only 17 games at the helm of Rangers.

Their initial Premiership victory arrived as late as September, and they suffered a crushing 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the August Champions League qualifiers.

Earlier, ex Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard had dismissed any possibility of returning for another spell as Ibrox boss.

He had guided Rangers to the Scottish championship in 2020/21, marking their most recent title win.
