Stones supports Man City colleague Foden in creating selection challenge for Tuchel with England

John Stones thinks his Manchester City colleague Phil Foden has presented England coach Thomas Tuchel with a tough selection decision before the upcoming final World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania next week.

Foden maintained his strong beginning to the season by netting two goals to help City secure a 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The creative player experienced a dip in performance during a challenging 2024/25 season and was left out by Tuchel last month.

However City defender Stones believes Fodens present form justifies bringing him back into the England setup with Tuchel due to announce his squad for the teams final competitive fixtures before next years World Cup on Friday.

"I am really delighted for him" Stones commented. "I am a huge admirer of Phil in all aspects of his play the way he approaches the game and how it all flows so effortlessly for him.

"I am thrilled he is scoring again feeling content and relishing his football. That is when he performs at his peak.

"I know he is eager to be included. He has been vital to the team and I am aware the coach holds him in high regard.

"It is an honour to represent the side and we all must compete to secure our spots but undoubtedly he has provided a real selection puzzle for the manager."

Stones also aims to hold onto his England position as he regains fitness after his own injury struggles last season which he lately admitted made him consider stepping away from the game.

The 31 year old stated: "I have not heard anything yet. I can only focus on my performances here push for my place and await the outcome."

City will welcome league champions Liverpool next in a Premier League encounter between the sides sitting second and third on Sunday.

"The action keeps coming but this is why we play the sport we adore being part of these high stakes matches" Stones remarked.

"We have enjoyed some memorable clashes with them across the years. Our competition has intensified and it is exciting to participate in it."
