Southampton stun Fulham with late victory to secure FA Cup quarter-final spot

Southampton, competing in the Championship, advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals after a surprising 1-0 victory over Fulham this Sunday.

Ross Stewart delivered a composed penalty kick during added time at Craven Cottage, clinching the unexpected fifth-round result for Southampton.

The defeat proved humiliating for Fulham's manager Marco Silva, whose bold experiment with the lineup ultimately led to his downfall.

Following a frustrating 1-0 loss to West Ham in the Premier League earlier this week, Silva introduced nine alterations to his team, yet these moves did not deliver the intended performance.

The decisive moment arrived in the opening minute of stoppage time, as Finn Azaz was tripped inside the area by Fulham's Joachim Andersen, enabling Stewart to fire his penalty beyond Benjamin Lecomte.

After dropping out of the Premier League last season, Southampton have now progressed to the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2022.

This achievement acted as a poignant homage to the most iconic moment in the club's past.

The players sported special yellow jerseys to commemorate 50 years since they last wore such outfits, when Bobby Stokes scored the winner in second-division Southampton's remarkable 1976 FA Cup final triumph against Manchester United at Wembley.

The current Southampton team has considerable ground to cover before replicating the exploits of Lawrie McMenemy's legendary squad.

Nevertheless, Tonda Eckert's group boasts an impressive 10-match unbeaten run across all tournaments, as they aim for FA Cup success and a Championship play-off position.

Further matches on Sunday include Sunderland's trip to League One strugglers Port Vale at the foot of the table, Leeds entertaining Championship rivals Norwich, with West Ham taking on Brentford on Monday.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have already confirmed their progression to the quarter-finals.
