French Footballers' Union Stands by Rabiot in Serie A Overseas Match Dispute
On Thursday the French professional footballers association UNFP voiced its support for Adrien Rabiot following his public comments regarding UEFA's approval of AC Milan's plan to stage a domestic league fixture in Australia.
Rabiot an AC Milan midfielder described UEFA's choice to permit a home fixture against Como in Perth on 8 February as entirely unreasonable.
San Siro stadium will be unavailable on this date as it is scheduled to host the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on 6 February.
Rabiot's remarks drew strong criticism from Serie A chief executive Luigi De Siervo who on Wednesday advised the player to focus on his earnings rather than contesting the decision.
De Siervo stated Rabiot like other players receiving substantial salaries should remember they are employed to play football.
He must show greater appreciation for his income and provide stronger backing to his club Milan who supported and promoted this overseas fixture.
However the UNFP defended Rabiot for expressing concerns which they noted are held by the overwhelming majority of professional athletes.
Not every player has the opportunity to engage with the media and communicate their views in this manner the UNFP added.
Nevertheless they should recognise that as central figures in the sport they possess both the right and obligation to voice their opinions.
The right to free expression for footballers is a core principle which the UNFP will consistently uphold alongside FIFPRO the global players association it emphasised.
UEFA confirmed this week that it had reluctantly authorised AC Milan's home fixture against Como in Perth as well as a La Liga match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami Florida on 20 December.
European fan organisations described these decisions as illogical costly and environmentally questionable with Rabiot clearly stating his position.
This is completely illogical Rabiot told Le Figaro Commercial agreements exist to maintain the league's profile yet such matters are beyond our control as players.
Travelling such a great distance to play a match between two Italian teams in Australia makes no sense he added.
