Ouedraogo stunner sends Leipzig second

A brilliant second-half strike by new German midfielder Assan Ouedraogo powered RB Leipzig to a 2-0 victory against Werder Bremen at home on Sunday, boosting them back into second position.

Austrian midfielder Xaver Schlager netted for Leipzig with 10 minutes to play, securing the result.

The triumph positioned Leipzig alone in second, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen by two points and trailing top side Bayern Munich by six.

The young Ouedraogo had netted on his Germany debut during a 6-0 win over Slovakia at the venue on Monday, and he posed a threat from the start, creating two chances in the first period.

At the 63-minute mark, the 19-year-old swivelled, switched the ball to his left foot, and fired a fierce effort from afar into the upper corner.

Werder Bremen seemed to draw level soon after when Keke Topp finished from a set-piece corner, yet the effort was disallowed for a marginal offside call.

Schlager entered as a substitute and grabbed Leipzig's second, nudging in a rebound from near the goal line.

RB Leipzig, absent from European tournaments last season for the first time ever, have surrendered only four points from 30 available in the Bundesliga following their initial 6-0 loss to Bayern Munich.

Later that Sunday, ailing St Pauli will welcome Union Berlin. St Pauli have endured seven consecutive league defeats and hold the spot for the relegation playoff.
