Netherlands boss Koeman hails solid showing as Van Dijk urges further progress

The Netherlands will face Ecuador in Eindhoven on Tuesday before taking on Algeria in June while building towards the World Cup from 11 June until 19 July in North America.

"Our display was straightforwardly strong against a formidable nation," Koeman remarked during a media briefing.

"It is rather characteristic of Dutch thinking to assume that facing Norway means you must prevail. Reality differs. During the qualification rounds they overcame Italy on two occasions.

"Norway enjoyed positive moments versus us yet over the full game I believe our victory was justified."

The Dutch side missing key players conceded an initial goal to Andreas Schjelderup but responded with strikes from Van Dijk plus Tijjani Reijnders.

Van Dijk showed muted satisfaction with the teams effort and avoided responding to queries on the Netherlands true potential at the World Cup hosted across Canada Mexico and the United States.

“Plenty remains to refine. Certain periods flowed nicely though others fell short,” he commented.

“The second period saw us improve somewhat as fatigue affected them more. In the end we created ample opportunities for additional scores. Our backline held firm too. The win was earned and we press forward.”

The Netherlands sit in Group F for the World Cup alongside Japan Tunisia and whichever emerges between Poland or Sweden.
