Messi to unveil 21-metre statue of himself on India 'GOAT' tour

Lionel Messi is scheduled to reveal a 21-metre (70-foot) statue depicting himself in India this Saturday, marking the start of a three-day journey across the nation that has ignited massive excitement among supporters.

This iron creation in Kolkata captures Messi raising the World Cup trophy and forms an element of the acclaimed GOAT Tour, covering four locations in India along with a potential encounter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The 38-year-old icon from Argentina and Inter Miami will disclose the landmark through a virtual event instead of appearing personally, citing security measures.

A dedicated "Hola Messi" area for fans has been arranged in Kolkata, showcasing a full-scale model of Messi positioned on a throne.

The space further mimics his Miami residence, featuring figures representing his relatives.

Soccer supporter Samir Nandy described spotting his hero as "a dream come true".

"True icons emerge not just from triumphs. His determination is what drew me to support him," remarked the 64-year-old Nandy in Kolkata.

"This monument offers a proper recognition of his legacy."

Monti Paul, the lead craftsman for the statue, shared with AFP that the piece was assembled in just 40 days.

"Crafting this piece for Messi fills me with pride. It stands as the loftiest work I have completed," he commented.

The recipient of eight Ballon d'Or awards will further connect with Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan and ex-Indian cricket leader Sourav Ganguly amid his fast-paced stop in Kolkata.

Before his trip, Messi expressed that visiting India and connecting with admirers is a privilege.

"India holds a unique place in my heart, and I cherish the recollections from my visit 14 years back, the supporters were incredible," Messi noted in an official release.

"India boasts a fervent soccer culture, and I eagerly await engaging with emerging supporters while expressing my affection for this captivating sport."

Post-Kolkata, including a quick exhibition game there, Messi will travel to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

During his time in Hyderabad, he plans to join a special performance tribute and another casual match.

Accounts suggest he has an appointment with Modi in New Delhi.

Messi recently claimed his second successive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player honour this week, guiding Inter Miami to victory in the MLS and dominating the scoring charts.

The striker who previously shone at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain will captain Argentina's bid to retain the World Cup across June and July in North America.
