Japan Thrash Philippines 7-0 to Advance to Women's Asian Cup Semi-Finals

Japan showed no mercy as they demolished the Philippines 7-0 on Sunday, securing a spot in the Women's Asian Cup semi-final against South Korea and edging closer to a third continental championship.

This commanding win at Stadium Australia in Sydney also guarantees their place at a 10th straight World Cup in Brazil next year.

Japan stands as the sole Asian nation to claim the World Cup title, achieving it in 2011, and they finished as runners-up four years afterwards.

Ranked eighth globally, the top position among Asian Cup participants, they outclassed their opponents by netting two goals within three minutes towards the end of the first half, which unleashed a torrent of scores.

Tottenham's defender Toko Koga notched a pair of goals, joined by strikes from Mina Tanaka, Remina Chiba, Manaka Matsukubo, Momoko Tanikawa, and Riko Ueki, sending a strong message to their rivals for the crown.

Japan has fired in a competition-leading 24 goals while keeping a clean sheet throughout.

"Our defenders faced little pressure, and we maintained total dominance," commented Japan coach Nils Nielsen.

"It is pleasing to rack up so many goals and allow the players to demonstrate their abilities."

This outcome arranges a quarter-final showdown in Sydney on Wednesday versus a formidable South Korea side, which overwhelmed Uzbekistan 6-0 to move forward.

The host nation Australia will meet title holders China in the remaining semi-final in Perth on Tuesday.

"Regarding the 24 goals, I had not realised that figure, but I was aware we had netted plenty, which is enjoyable," the Greenland-born Nielsen remarked.

"We are prepared for the encounter with South Korea. Our ties with them are positive, making it an engaging and enjoyable fixture for the squad."

Japan pressed relentlessly, unleashing a barrage of first-half assaults yet struggling to breach the sturdy Philippine backline and the reliable grasp of teenage keeper Nina Meollo.

They finally broke through in the 45th minute as Tanaka nodded the ball home from near point-blank after a chaotic tussle in the box.

With the Philippines shaken, Koga slotted the second during added time at the end of the half, leaping highest to meet Honoka Hayashi's corner kick.

The latter period unfolded almost entirely within the Philippines' half.

The third came via Eintracht Frankfurt forward Chiba, who blasted into the bottom left corner, followed swiftly by Matsukubo's clever manoeuvre past two markers to net the fourth just two minutes on.

Koga headed the fifth, while Tanikawa and Ueki compounded the woe in the closing stages.

Even with the loss, hope remains for the Philippines, who advance to a play-off against Uzbekistan, with a victory there earning them a berth in Brazil.

North Korea will face Taiwan in the other play-off match.
