Keeper Converts 89th Minute Penalty in Sensational Style Securing Telstar Eredivisie Status
FC Volendam and Telstar met in a crucial encounter that would determine their futures in the league. FC Volendam were two points behind Telstar in 16th place placing them in a precarious position regarding the relegation play offs.
The home side began strongly and went ahead early through Anthony Descotte who struck a powerful shot past Ronald Koeman Jr into the bottom corner.
Telstar skipper Danny Bakker equalised near half time by heading in a free kick from Jeff Hardeveld essentially ensuring Telstar stayed in the Eredivisie.
88th minute penalty awarded to the goalkeeper
The second period was full of excitement and delivered on that promise. Koeman made a great save to deny Descotte a second goal but soon found himself in the spotlight.
After a VAR check referee Mark Nagtegaal awarded Telstar a penalty late on. Prior to this Telstar had only had three penalties in the Eredivisie this season with Danny Bakker and Soufiane Hetli missing theirs while Bakker and Jeff Hardeveld had succeeded in the cup.
Despite Bakker and Hardeveld being on the pitch manager Anthony Correia chose Ronald Koeman Jr to take the vital spot kick. In the 89th minute with everything on the line Koeman converted the penalty into the bottom corner securing victory and survival in the Eredivisie for the club.
Telstar had returned to the top flight after 47 years following promotion via the play offs last season. They had been in the drop zone for most of the campaign but ended up 14th thanks to this result.
FC Volendam will now contest the relegation play offs against Willem II in a tie that will decide their top division status for next term.
