German keeper Ter Stegen facing hamstring surgery

Germanys main goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is scheduled for surgery on his damaged hamstring this Friday, according to a statement from his team Girona released on Wednesday.

The injury occurred during a match for the La Liga outfit over the weekend.

In a social media update, Girona noted that the 33 year old player will have the procedure this Friday to address the hamstring issue in his left thigh.

The club mentioned that details on his recovery period will follow the surgery.

Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan from Barcelona in January, aiming for more matches ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which begins in little more than four months.

Reports from Spanish outlets suggest Girona may return the injured player to Barcelona, an option allowed in their loan terms.

This development represents another blow for Germanys primary goalkeeper, casting uncertainty over his World Cup involvement.

Stepping in as Germanys first choice after Manuel Neuers retirement in 2024, Ter Stegen has endured multiple injuries lately.

On Tuesday, national team manager Julian Nagelsmann expressed support for Ter Stegen following the severe injury.

The coach stated, At this moment, the priority is his recovery without extra stress. We stand by him fully.

Nagelsmann also indicated that Ter Stegen will miss action until at least April, skipping two international friendlies in March.
