Frankfurt Suffer Home Defeat to Union Berlin Amid Late Rally
Following their impressive Champions League triumph over Galatasaray on Thursday, Eintracht Frankfurt came crashing down with a 4-3 home loss to a dynamic Union Berlin side driven by Oliver Burke on Sunday.
Union Berlin enjoyed a commanding 4-1 advantage after 60 minutes, powered by a hat-trick from Burke and a spectacular effort from Ilyas Ansah.
Frankfurt mounted a late challenge starting with ten minutes left. Union manager Steffen Baumgart earned a red card for arguing over a penalty call against his team, yet the away side managed to withstand the pressure.
Nine minutes into the match, Ansah blasted a fierce long-range shot to open the scoring for Union, soon followed by a swift counter from Scotland's Burke that extended the lead to two goals.
Just three days after rallying from behind to defeat Galatasaray 5-1, Frankfurt showed little vigour and were lucky to halve the deficit when a shot from Nathaniel Brown took a deflection moments before the break.
The pacey Burke reasserted Union's control in the second half, netting twice within four minutes via a header and a breakaway strike, both created by Andrej Ilic.
Frankfurt finally stirred into action with ten minutes remaining, as midfielder Can Uzun rifled in a volley, before Union's Leopold Querfeld fouled Jonathan Burkardt to concede a penalty.
German forward Burkardt slotted away the penalty confidently, prompting Baumgart to lash out by kicking cardboard litter onto the pitch in anger, resulting in his dismissal.
Union Berlin secured their second triumph of the season by holding firm under pressure.
Further into Sunday's fixtures, Bayer Leverkusen entertain beleaguered Borussia Moenchengladbach at home, while Borussia Dortmund host Wolfsburg.
