Emery insists Monchi departure alters nothing at Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery stated that the abrupt exit of his close associate Monchi from the Premier League outfit will have no bearing on his own plans.

Monchi, a former colleague of Emery from their time at Sevilla, stepped down from his position as Villas president of football operations earlier this week, with ex-Real Sociedad sporting director Roberto Olabe taking over promptly.

Since Emery assumed control in 2022, Villa have experienced a remarkable ascent, securing spots in European tournaments over the last three years and advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals in the previous season.

That said, the team has endured a dismal beginning to the current term, following a challenging summer transfer period constrained by financial fair play regulations.

"Monchi joined us half a year after our arrival. He performed exceptionally well, yet after two years, he sought a fresh phase in his professional journey," Emery remarked prior to Thursdays Europa League encounter with Bologna.

"I wish him every success in this new venture.

"Together with him and the club, we opted for a smooth handover. It alters nothing, merely replacing the individual.

"We moved swiftly to appoint someone I know well. I hold great trust in Roberto, and he joins to support our efforts."

Villa currently sit 18th in the Premier League table, having garnered three points and netted just one goal across their initial five fixtures.

Emery aims to revitalise his teams campaign through the Europa League, a tournament he triumphed in four times from 2014 to 2021 while at Sevilla and Villarreal.

"I informed the squad that Europe remains a perpetual aspiration for me," the Spanish coach noted.

"Sharing it with the fans, two years back in the Conference League, Villa Park offered incredible atmospheres. The prior year in the Champions League proved equally thrilling.

"I believe the fans will share my enthusiasm for this tournament. It presents yet another chance to create memorable occasions."

Emery delivered rare criticism of his squads display after squandering an advantage against 10-man Sunderland, resulting in a 1-1 stalemate on Sunday.

Nevertheless, England centre-back Ezri Konsa agreed with his coaches assessment, calling Villas defensive effort "lazy".

"That is a valid observation. The incident and the goal were plain for all to see," he commented. "Hearing harsh words from your coach adds motivation to silence the doubters."
