Billy Bonds West Ham icon passes away at 79

The Premier League side West Ham United revealed that their iconic ex-captain and manager Billy Bonds passed away at the age of 79 on Sunday.

Having featured in 799 matches over a remarkable 21 years with the club from east London Bonds holds the record as West Hams most enduring player.

He celebrated FA Cup triumphs in both 1975 and 1980 progressed to the 1976 European Cup Winners Cup final and claimed the former Second Division title alongside the Hammers.

Transitioning to coaching starting with the West Ham youth setup Bonds took on the managers role in February 1990.

He guided the team to Second Division promotion in 1991 and following a drop from the top tier in 1992 achieved promotion once more the next year.

A family statement read We are devastated to share that our cherished Dad left us today. He was utterly committed to his loved ones and embodied kindness loyalty selflessness and deep affection.

Dad held West Ham United and its passionate fans close to his heart cherishing every second spent with the club.

He remains forever in our hearts and will be sorely missed. We find solace in the knowledge that his enduring legacy persists.

Bonds departed the Hammers in 1994 succeeded in management by his deputy Harry Redknapp.

Regarded as the clubs all time finest player Bonds has a stand dedicated to him at the London Stadium.

Always shunning the spotlight he earned universal affection regard and admiration from teammates players and fans who will eternally hail themselves as Billy Bonds Claret and Blue Army West Ham statement noted.

May you rest in peace Billy our brave motivating lion hearted captain.

West Ham stated there will be a tribute moment to celebrate Bonds before their Premier League home clash with Liverpool this Sunday.

A comprehensive homage is planned prior to the December 14 match versus Aston Villa at the London Stadium.
