Achraf Hakimi set to debut in Morocco's concluding AFCON group stage match
The African footballer of the year Achraf Hakimi is poised to make his debut at the Africa Cup of Nations as hosts Morocco face Zambia on Monday, with coach Walid Regragui giving the confirmation.
"His recovery has been remarkable. I can confirm that Achraf will feature tomorrow," Regragui stated on Sunday in Rabat, ahead of Morocco's final group encounter.
"He might start or come on later, but it will mark his initial outing at the AFCON.
"Our goal is to advance deep into the tournament, so we aim to have Achraf evolve alongside the squad and retain him throughout the event."
Hakimi has been sidelined since an ankle issue during a Paris Saint Germain fixture early in November and remained an unused bench option in Morocco's opening two fixtures at the Nations Cup.
Lacking his presence, Morocco secured a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the initial match before drawing 1-1 with Mali on Friday.
They lead Group A with four points from two games, and a triumph over Zambia would secure top spot and progression to the round of 16. Even a stalemate would confirm their knockout stage entry.
"Many overlook the impact Achraf provides to our lineup," Regragui remarked.
"We managed two fixtures without our top performer, our leader and skipper, yet we did not falter. Fellow team members stepped up in his absence.
"Would the squad differ with Achraf included? Absolutely. He ranks as Africa's premier talent and among the global elite."
Hakimi expressed his annoyance at missing the prior two games and voiced regret over Moroccan fans booing the team in the Mali stalemate.
"We understand the challenges at times, their desire for victories and commanding halftime leads, yet opponents merit respect too," noted the backline player who aided PSG in clinching the Champions League last term.
"Booing us is unacceptable. We need fan support.
"I encountered similar at Paris Saint Germain during Champions League struggles and defeats, where critics dismissed our quality and coaching, but we ultimately claimed European honours.
"With backing from the crowd, we can unite to conquer Africa."
In addition, Hakimi shared his joy at spotting his companion and ex-PSG colleague Kylian Mbappe, currently at Real Madrid, among spectators for the Mali clash.
"Seeing my friend in my homeland is wonderful. He adores Morocco and visits often with family. The local cuisine captivates him!"
