Yamal's treble inspires Barcelona to thrashing of Villarreal while Atletico claim third spot

Barcelona's young sensation Lamine Yamal notched the maiden hat-trick of his professional career during a convincing 4-1 victory against Villarreal on Saturday, propelling the Catalan club four points ahead at the summit of La Liga.

The Spanish talent netted twice before the break, and following Pape Gueye's response for the away team at Camp Nou, he coolly added a third for Hansi Flick's squad.

Robert Lewandowski sealed Barcelona's success with a straightforward finish towards the end, widening their advantage over Real Madrid, who face Getafe at home on Monday, and leaving fourth-placed Villarreal a massive 13 points behind the title holders.

Atletico Madrid climbed to third, matching Villarreal's points tally, thanks to Julian Alvarez's decisive strike securing a narrow 1-0 triumph over struggling Real Oviedo at the bottom of the table.

Barcelona's prodigy Yamal, appearing to have shaken off a persistent groin problem that hampered him for weeks earlier in the season and affected his sharpness, delivered a sparkling display.

"It combined various factors. I was not in a great place mentally, coupled with the groin trouble, so I was not enjoying my football, and it was evident," Yamal shared with Movistar.

"Over the past week, I've sensed a real uplift. That joy of smiling on the pitch, absent for ages, has returned, and now I feel delighted. I'm enjoying my game and truly satisfied."

The forward etched his name in history as the youngest to achieve a hat-trick in La Liga during the 21st century, at just 18 years and 230 days.

Yamal has now matched his total of 18 strikes from the previous campaign across all tournaments, establishing himself as Barcelona's leading marksman and addressing a key aspect of his development that required attention.

"I believe I've progressed gradually. The thing is, fans expect me to bag 100 goals at 16, and I'd love that too, but it's incredibly tough," Yamal added, clutching the match ball.

"So, step by step, but I'm thrilled, whether it's one goal or two, as long as it aids the team."

Flick noted that Yamal had been short on assurance at the start of the term.

"Defenders have been assigning two or three markers to him. You could tell he lacked the belief or rhythm for those direct duels," Flick explained to the press.

"Whenever he relishes his football, it benefits him immensely and us too."

The Yamal spectacle

Barcelona opened the scoring when Fermin Lopez regained possession in an advanced area and supplied Yamal, who elegantly bent the ball into the net after 28 minutes.

Nine minutes later, Yamal's second arrived via an exquisite solo effort, surging inwards from the flank.

The 18-year-old outmanoeuvred Sergi Cardona and Alberto Moleiro before unleashing a curling shot into the top far corner.

Gueye nodded in from near post following a set-piece corner, and Ayoze Perez came close to equalising for Villarreal prior to Yamal's treble-completing effort.

Coming off the bench, Pedri threaded a precise ball to the youngster, who slotted it home with precision.

"Containing a talent like that is no easy task," remarked Villarreal manager Marcelino Garcia Toral about Yamal.

"Our defence was poor on that third goal. We essentially handed him a clear path, and against Lamine, that's bound to end in a goal."

Lewandowski converted Barcelona's fourth after neat interplay involving Pedri and Jules Kounde, the latter enjoying one of his standout performances this season.

Netting at least four times is essential for Barcelona as they welcome Atletico Madrid for the Copa del Rey semi-final return fixture, seeking to overturn a daunting 4-0 deficit.

"Facing Atletico is always challenging, especially needing four goals, but we'll battle on and refuse to surrender," Flick affirmed.

"Having Lamine at this peak is superb for the squad, and we require him performing this way on Tuesday."

Atletico kept the upcoming cup tie in focus amid a laboured showing at Oviedo, until Alvarez broke a league scoring famine of almost four months by tucking away the winner in the 94th minute to secure points for Diego Simeone's team.

Atletico relied on fine stops from Jan Oblak to stay even, before raising their tempo in the latter stages and ultimately prevailing.

"Our performance built from modest beginnings, we shone in the second period, and Julian's late strike proved vital for him and the group," Simeone commented to Movistar.
