Wolfsburg dismiss coach Bauer amid growing relegation fears

Bundesliga side Wolfsburg revealed on Sunday that they have dismissed coach Daniel Bauer, as the team sits second from bottom and risks dropping out of the top division for the first time ever.

The teams 2-1 defeat at home against Hamburg on Saturday marked the most recent challenge for the 2009 German title winners.

Bauer stepped in temporarily following the dismissal of his predecessor Paul Simonis back in November. He managed three victories in his opening seven fixtures but has only collected two points from his subsequent eight games.

Sunday reports from German outlets indicate that seasoned coach Dieter Hecking, who guided Wolfsburg to the German Cup triumph in 2015 alongside a second place finish in the Bundesliga, is poised to step in and assist the club in staving off relegation.

The Volkswagen backed outfit has avoided relegation since entering the elite league back in 1997. At present, Wolfsburg lag two points behind Werder Bremen, the side holding the position for the relegation playoff.
