Wirtz calls Liverpool's draw with Burnley feeling like a loss
Florian Wirtz described Liverpool's 1-1 draw against struggling Burnley on Saturday as feeling like a defeat, following the Premier League title holders dropping points for the fourth consecutive match.
Arne Slot's team remains unbeaten across their last 12 outings in all competitions, yet they are finding it hard to finish off opponents.
The Germany midfielder Wirtz gave the hosts the lead at Anfield on Saturday, after Dominik Szoboszlai had a penalty saved, but Marcus Edwards equalised for the away team with their sole effort on goal in the 65th minute.
Liverpool registered 32 attempts overall, with 11 striking the target, but they failed to capitalise on their superiority.
Wirtz, who has started to shine after a tentative beginning at Anfield, expressed frustration over the outcome.
"It feels like a defeat," he remarked. "With that many attempts and so many on target, we really needed to net more times.
"Certain matches turn out this way you give it your all, but the ball just won't cross the line. We grab just one point, yet for the upcoming fixture, we push forward and aim to improve."
Liverpool manager Slot criticised his team's lack of cutting edge up front and their habit of leaking goals even when restricting opportunities.
"This was a match we ought to have secured," he stated to the BBC. "There is little else I could demand regarding opportunities generated."
The result positions Liverpool in fourth place on the Premier League standings, trailing third-placed Aston Villa by seven points while leading fifth-placed Manchester United by one.
