West Ham progress to FA Cup quarter-finals after Ouattara's penalty error

West Ham advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals via a 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Brentford, who suffered due to Dango Ouattara's missed spot-kick on Monday.

Nuno Espirito Santo's team surrendered the lead on two occasions, with Jarrod Bowen's brace matched by Igor Thiago's two goals, leading to extra-time at the London Stadium.

During the shoot-out, Brentford's winger Ouattara opted for a chipped Panenka penalty, yet his poor attempt went directly at West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

This was a terrible error from the Burkina Faso player, and West Ham capitalised on it.

Bowen, Valentin Castellanos, Callum Wilson, Tomas Soucek, and Konstantinos Mavropanos all successfully scored their penalties, securing a home tie against Leeds in April for a semi-final spot.

This marks the east London outfit's first FA Cup quarter-final appearance in a decade, offering some relief amid a challenging season.

Currently third from the bottom in the Premier League table, level on goal difference with Nottingham Forest, they have nine matches left to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Sitting seventh in the Premier League and eyeing European spots, Brentford squandered their opportunity to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1989.

Tormented by relegation fears, Nuno rotated seven players from the lineup that defeated Fulham in the league last week, focusing on their fight to stay up.

West Ham opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Mateus Fernandes delivered a cross to the back post, which Tomas Soucek nodded down, allowing Bowen to react first and guide the ball past Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Brentford levelled just nine minutes later when Thiago nodded Nathan Collins' header into the goal with his chest, a decision upheld after VAR review for possible handball and offside.

The Hammers regained the advantage in the 34th minute after Adama Traore was fouled in the box by Michael Kayode.

Referee Andy Madley initially waved play on, but VAR official Constantine Hatzidakis prompted him to review the monitor, leading to a penalty award upon re-examination.

Undeterred by the extended wait, Bowen deceived Kelleher from the spot.

Nathan Collins' header was cleared off the line by Ollie Scarles, while West Ham's Axel Disasi squandered a clear chance close in after Kelleher saved from Soucek.

Kelleher pulled off another excellent stop from Soucek right before the break.

Bowen fell short of a hat-trick as Kelleher denied the England international again in the second half.

West Ham's earlier failures proved costly in the 81st minute when Brentford levelled to send the game to extra-time.

Crysencio Summerville fouled Kayode to concede a penalty, and Thiago converted confidently.

The Brazilian striker, with 21 goals across all competitions in his breakout year, is vying for a Brazil World Cup team place.

Having exhausted their substitutions, West Ham ended extra-time with 10 players after Summerville limped off late on.
