Villarreal hold on to beat Celta Vigo & all but seal spot in next season's Champions League

The match kicked off in dramatic fashion as referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez awarded a penalty within the first 30 seconds, following a run by Alberto Moleiro into the Celta penalty area where he was fouled by Yoel Lago. Gerard Moreno calmly placed the kick into the bottom corner, handing Villarreal an early lead in the second minute.

Celta began to mount some pressure just after the 10-minute mark, with Borja Iglesias involved in a chaotic sequence near goal from a corner, and Pablo Duran firing a volley from another, though that marked the limit of their offensive efforts.

Villarreal doubled their advantage shortly before the 30-minute point with only their second effort on target. Alfonso Pedraza pursued a long pass along the left flank and squared it to the penalty area edge, allowing Moreno to leave it for Nicolas Pepe, who finished neatly past Ionut Radu on the first touch.

Eventually, Celta tested Arnau Tenas at the opposite goal, but he blocked an opportunity for Sergio Carreira confidently, then leaped to deny a controlled volley from Hugo Alvarez off a precise delivery by Oscar Mingueza right before the interval.

Considering Celta's strong away record, trailing only Barcelona and Real Madrid in points earned on the road, and with 15 of their 21 visiting goals scored in the second half, the contest remained wide open.

Hugo Alvarez aimed to spark a response soon after the restart but missed the mark from a favourable spot, while Radu preserved Celta's hopes with an excellent double stop to thwart Georges Mikautadze and Pape Gueye approaching the hour.

After nearly securing the game, Gueye handed Claudio Giraldez's team a lifeline in the final 20 minutes via a rash foul on Iglesias in the penalty area. Iglesias stepped up for the spot-kick, which Tenas initially saved, yet the official ordered a retake due to intrusion.

On the second effort, Iglesias blasted it beyond the keeper into the upper corner.

Celta came perilously close to levelling matters with 10 minutes to go as Ferran Jutgla nodded an Iago Aspas delivery onto the woodwork.

Villarreal could have eased tensions in the closing stages if Alfon had connected better with a volley, instead striking it directly at Radu, yet Marcelino's team held firm to stretch their lead to 15 points over fifth position with five games left.

Celta missed out on reclaiming a European berth, extending their barren run at La Ceramica to five straight outings without reward.
