Victor Wanyama: Kenya's Trailblazing Champions League Scorer Retires from Professional Football
On Friday, Wanyama shared an emotional post on social media, declaring that he had fulfilled his lifelong ambition and expressing deep appreciation to everyone who stood by him during his career.
“Today I announce my retirement from football,” Wanyama stated in a social media update on Friday.
“Four different countries. Six different clubs. A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch.
“To my family, friends, agent, the fans, and the coaching staff that helped me throughout my career. Thank you for walking this journey with me.
“I now take my next step into coaching where I will be completing my UEFA A License this year.”
Wanyama netted against Barcelona while at Celtic
Wanyama etched his name in history as the inaugural Kenyan to find the net in the Champions League, opening the scoring in Celtic’s 2-1 triumph against Barcelona back in 2012.
In 2013, he transferred to Premier League side Southampton for £12.5 million, setting a record as the priciest departure from a Scottish club then, eclipsing the £9.5 million fee that Russian outfit Spartak Moscow shelled out for Aiden McGeady in 2010.
During the summer of 2016, he joined Southampton’s Premier League competitors Tottenham Hotspur, remaining there until March 2020, after which he linked up with Major League Soccer team Montreal Impact. In March 2025, Wanyama made a comeback to Scotland, signing with Dunfermline Athletic under his ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon.
Upon arriving at Celtic on a five-year contract, Wanyama’s initial league outing for the team was a 1-0 defeat to St Johnstone on 21 August 2011, where he featured in central defence instead of his preferred central midfield position.
He entered as a late replacement in a 4-0 victory versus Motherwell, and covered the entire second half in a 2-0 League Cup success against Ross County. In 2011, he lined up in Celtic’s 1-1 stalemate with Italian side Udinese in the Europa League.
This marked his debut European appearance for the club. On 10 December 2011, Wanyama bagged his maiden goal for Celtic in a 1–0 success over Hearts at Celtic Park, unleashing a stunning 25-yard effort that nestled in the top corner.
His standout displays in December clinched him the Scottish Premier League young player of the month honour. He notched his second goal for Celtic in January 2012 during a 3-0 rout of Dunfermline at East End Park.
Wanyama also struck in Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Dundee United at Celtic Park and in the 4–0 thrashing of Hearts at Tynecastle.
Wanyama first represented Kenya aged only 15
During his Spurs tenure, Wanyama stands out for his thunderous leveller in Tottenham’s 2-2 tie with Liverpool in 2018, which earned the accolade of Premier League Goal of the Month.
While at CF Montreal managed by Thierry Henry, the midfielder led his team to a 1-0 win against Toronto FC in the 2021 Canadian Championship final. In October 2022, Wanyama first indicated he would let his CF Montreal contract expire at season’s end.
Yet, come January 2023, he inked a fresh two-year deal to stay with the Canadian outfit. Following his Montreal spell, Wanyama penned a short-term agreement with Scottish Championship team Dunfermline Athletic until the campaign concluded, teaming up again with his previous Celtic head coach and current Dunfermline manager Neil Lennon.
Just three days on, he featured on debut in a 3-0 setback to Ayr United, receiving a red card in the 84th minute for handling the ball. Wanyama’s international bow for Kenya came in May 2007 at age 15, in a friendly versus Nigeria, and he participated in every one of Kenya's six 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
He assumed the captaincy of the Harambee Stars in 2013 and featured for Kenya at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Tottenham used their official social media to honour Wanyama, lauding his contributions and extending retirement wishes.
“We had Victor Wanyama, and he was fantastic. We enjoyed every moment. Wishing you all the very best in your retirement, Victor. Thank you for the memories,” the Premier League side’s message stated.
Football Kenya Federation president Mohammed Hussein commented, “Congratulations Victor Wanyama on your remarkable career. As you hang up your boots, we celebrate your illustrious career marked by resilience, dedication, patience, and passion for the sport.
“Your journey, from Kenya to Europe, your skills and leadership on and off the pitch will continue inspiring future generations and will be remembered for years to come. Wishing you a happy retirement and a fulfilling next chapter.”
Maruti Brian remarked: “As of now you are Kenya's finest to have ever graced the great English league.....The Lion of Muthurwa is back at the Den, whereas Don Omeo added: “What a career you had Wanyama, thank you for representing Kenya at football’s biggest stages.”
Wanyama collected more than 60 international appearances for Harambee Stars after his debut in May 2007 aged 15.
