VAR Role Broadened to Encompass Second Yellow Cards and Corners Before World Cup
The range of VAR interventions will now include second yellow cards and corner decisions just in time for the World Cup following a gathering of football's rule makers on Saturday.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has also endorsed a set of initiatives aimed at curbing time-wasting tactics.
Even with worries about additional interruptions to the game's rhythm, VAR will play a larger part at the World Cup.
Presently, only direct red cards qualify for VAR checks, not instances of two cautionable offences.
IFAB states that wrongly given corners will only be overturned if the examination "can be finished straight away and without holding up the restart".
Timers will be added for goal-kicks, throw-ins, and substitutions to combat time-wasting.
Should a player exceed the limit, the ball goes to the opposing side, so a goal-kick might turn into a corner, or a throw-in passes to the rivals.
Players get 10 seconds to exit the pitch once their number appears on the substitution board.
If they do not comply, they have to depart right away, yet the replacement cannot enter until the next break in action, after a minimum of one minute of gameplay has passed.
Those needing medical attention for injuries, or whose injuries halt play, must stay off the field for one minute of action before returning.
These modifications, decided in a session in Cardiff, will enter the official laws from July 1, but will apply to the World Cup starting June 11.
IFAB plans discussions to create rules for cases where players exit the pitch to protest a referee's call and for instances of players shielding their mouth when facing opponents in games.
The Africa Cup of Nations decider was paused due to Senegal's players walking off after the hosts Morocco received a penalty in the closing stages.
Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior reported suffering racial abuse during a Champions League fixture against Benfica earlier this month, while Gianluca Prestianni hid his mouth using his shirt.
Prestianni rejects the accusation of racial abuse towards the Brazilian, but faces a temporary ban for the return leg of the playoff between the teams pending a UEFA probe.
