Union Berlin separates from head coach Baumgart and achieves milestone with female interim appointment
Horst Heldt, the managing director for men's professional football, explained on the club's official site that the move follows a "completely underwhelming second half of the season."
"We require points immediately to maintain our league position," Heldt noted as the primary aim. He doubts that "a recovery is feasible under the existing structure."
Marie Louise Eta breaks new ground
Temporarily, Marie Louise Eta will manage the team from the touchline. She is presently in charge of the U19s and set to helm the women's side from this summer onwards.
"I am glad Marie Louise Eta has accepted this interim position," Heldt commented.
Eta marks a landmark as the initial female head coach in a European men's elite division, though just temporarily.
Eta expressed optimism regarding league survival: "I appreciate the club assigning me this demanding responsibility.
"Union has long excelled at uniting and utilising every asset during difficult times. Naturally, I am convinced this squad will secure the essential points."
Baumgart came back to Berlin in January 2025. The ex forward represented the Eisernen between 2002 and 2004.
Union sat in ninth place after the season's opening half with 23 points. However, post winter break, Baumgart's squad has gained just nine additional points.
